Commercial Door Sweep Measuring & Installation Guide
Learn how to measure door undercut gaps, choose the right brush trim length, and install commercial door brush sweeps with slotted aluminum retainers.
How to Measure & Fit Commercial Door Sweeps
Commercial doors endure continuous foot traffic, building settling, and varied threshold heights. Installing an adjustable SEALEZE® brush door sweep seals gaps up to 3 inches without dragging or binding, reducing air infiltration by up to 98.5% compared to open door undercuts.
Measurement & Installation Steps
Measure the Door Width and Undercut Gap
Measure the exact width of the door along the bottom rail. Measure the gap between the bottom of the door and the threshold at the lock edge, hinge edge, and center point.
Select the Proper Brush Trim Length
Choose a brush trim length that equals your largest measured gap plus 1/8" to 1/4" for proper contact. The brush filaments should touch the threshold lightly without excessive splay.
Cut the Retainer and Brush to Width
Cut the aluminum retainer with a hacksaw. Slide the brush strip back slightly before cutting, cut the brush channel with side cutters or hacksaw, and crimp the end with pliers to lock filaments in place.
Position and Fasten the Sweep to the Door
With the door closed, hold the sweep against the exterior face of the door bottom. Fasten through the center of the slotted holes using self-drilling screws, allowing vertical adjustment.
Test Door Swing and Lock Clearance
Cycle the door open and closed several times. Verify that the brush conforms across the threshold, doesn't bind on floor mats, and allows the door closer to latch smoothly.
Brush Sweeps vs. Conventional Rubber/Vinyl
| Performance Feature | SEALEZE® Nylon Brush Sweep | Rubber / Vinyl Sweeps |
|---|---|---|
| Uneven Floor Conformity | 100% Dynamic Conformity | Binds or leaves open gaps |
| Cold Temperature Durability | Flexible down to -40°F | Cracks, splits and stiffens |
| Door Closer Drag / Resistance | Minimal friction (smooth latch) | High drag prevents positive latch |
| Cycle Life Testing | 2,000,000+ Cycles | 100,000 to 250,000 Cycles |
Frequently Asked Questions
Q:Should a commercial door sweep be installed on the interior or exterior of the door?
For outswing doors, sweeps are typically mounted on the exterior face. For inswing doors, sweeps are mounted on the interior face to sweep over the threshold.
Q:How do slotted holes in the aluminum retainer help during installation?
Slotted holes allow for easy vertical adjustment during initial installation and future readjustment as thresholds wear or buildings settle.
